As per my information,
1. SMTP banner (receiving SMTP server' welcome message) is rarely used in order to detect/reduce scamming. It only makes sense for dedicated mail serves (so one IP - one domain)

2. Instead, SMTP greeting (HELO message from transmitting SMTP client) is usually used in order to verify SMTP client
I've heard that Parallels is going to have in Plesk 12 the case 2 from above
