Visual Studio / WebMatrix has a feature called WebDeploy. This tool is a way to upload the website, similar to ftp. It has the added bonus of file comparison, skipping unused files, and is overall faster.
Other hosts have a button for 'downloading the publish profile'. Once downloaded I import it into my development environment (visual studio). and can press my publish button for no-hassle publishing.
