DNS / redirect sanity
Hi,
I'm quite sure licensing was counted (per domain) for domainnames that had hosting and/or redirection.
Apparently it counts subscriptions now. Many of our subscriptions are only for DNS. Not that it matters much to us directly, unlimited license anyways, but this could bite...
More importantly, I'm quite sure I used to be able to create a subscription, NOT enable webhosting (and mailhosting), point the A record to another webserver. Create an alias. Have the alias point to plesk by default (it copies the A record now, even though DNS sync is OFF ... it should use the DNS template in such a case in my humble opinion, if I wanted it to sync, I'd set it to sync) and actually were able to have the alias redirect to the main domain (you can't redirect now if the main domain isn't configured for hosting).
And sure, I can enable hosting (unlimited license) but it doesn't quite reflect what it actually does...
Whilst on the subject of not-too-savvy stuff Plesk does, it's been many years and apparently you guys still haven't managed DNS sanity.
Say my customers domain is domain.com. Of course he'd want his plesk server to be named something like plesk.domain.com. Since plesk will be the master DNS you also give it an A record for ns1.domain.com.
So far so good.
So you setup your DNS template with 3 NS records:
ns1.domain.com
ns3.ourdomain.nl
ns4.ourdomain.eu
Still pretty standard. Now it goes wrong here:
You create a subscription for domain.com. Add some aliases like otherdomain.com and alias.com and it will happily rewrite ns1.domain.com to ns1.otherdomain.com and ns1.alias.com. That is a HUGE no no. We don't use those NS records at the registrars. Our slaves aren't set up to trust those either, only ns1.domain.com.
Also you can't actually set what record is the master (it should be ns1.domain.com, but plesk just picks one at random. That has profound implications on how BIND notifies stuff and it hurts). Sure, you can add 'notify-to-soa yes' to the BIND config, but:
1) One shouldn't have to, plesk should just do the sane thing
2) There are very little guarantees plesk won't throw it out of the config at some point
TIA
