In my opinion you shouldn't consider a functionality because it's popular, but because it's a de-facto (or industry) standard and often required. But that's a whole different discussion.

Once again: you shouldn't implement functionality simply because it is important, but because it is required or necessary.
If no one finds this suggestion important, and the outdated MySQL Connector/ODBC (it *is* outdated, you know) stops working with MariaDB, which is your de facto standard SQL, you have a problem. For now, all is fine in the communication between MariaDB and MySQL Connector/ODBC, who knows how long that'll last.
