Upgrade Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and / or 20.04
I want to upgrade Plesk 18 from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04.
As described here: https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002913773-Ubuntu-18-04-support-in-Plesk
I’m glad to inform you that today we finally published dist-upgrade instructions for Plesk Obsidian.
Using this instruction server administrator can perform Operation System upgrade together with Plesk Obsidian.
Supported dist-upgrade paths:
Debian 9 to Debian 10
Ubuntu 16 to Ubuntu 18
Ubuntu 18 to Ubuntu 20
Note: Debian 8 → Debian 9 dist-upgrade path is not in the supported list.
Dist-upgrade chapter in Plesk Obsidian documentation: https://docs.plesk.com/en-US/obsidian/administrator-guide/server-administration/distupgrade-support.74627/
KB article with the particular instructions: https://support.plesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/213410369

Hi Guys, this is getting beyond the joke now.
Can we please get an official update from the Dev team on this requirement? It's clearly obvious that many people have been actively searching for this need which is why we have an active thread below.
There's no questioning the need for this, it's imperative that paying customers have an in-place upgrade path available. Note, if Plesk fails to support their clients in something as rudimentary as an OS upgrade path, once Ubuntu 16 becomes EOL, anyone that suffers a system compromise due to running an EOL distribution because of Plesk's inability to support an upgrade path, the liability unfortunately sits with Plesk. Clients will absolutely have the ability to litigate against the organisation on the basis of negligence.
Paying customers need to be supported and features like this are a no-brainer. You do NOT design software, especially a CP, that does not support an OS upgrade path. That is an epic fail by product management and development.
Please provide us users (that keep you guys in business) with an update ASAP.

I just read the thread above. An endless string of broken promises about an upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04, and now news that they're prioritizing upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04 over 16.04 to 18.04 which still has no ETA?!? Really?!? Seriously?!? Folks running 18.04 are in no danger of having their OS EOL'd, and most likely did a recent clean install from scratch. Why are they a priority over the existing install base?!?

Why is there a duplicate link from the Ubuntu 14-16 upgrade page, implying a separate vote and decision for 18.04 to 20.04? I support that as well, to be crystal clear, though we're a year away from doing that ourselves.

How is this even a question? People have production systems running on these boxes, often with custom software and autoconfiguration elements that a simple Plesk migration can't handle... these aren't VMs or containers where the underlying OS is completely abstracted away. Not being able to update from a soon to be EOL'd OS is highly highly problematic. I work with a hosting vendor that insists on using Plesk even when it is unnecessary for our needs and just makes everything more complex, I will be lobbying hard for them to transition to some other "control panel" methodology if this isn't addressed in short order.
Voting on this is a bad methodology; most end users don't have sites complex enough to make migration a problem, and heck, most users don't understand that there's an operating system under there that needs care and maintenance, they expect it to be magically upgraded by whatever vendor they're using, and the vendor expects the opposite in my experience, so you have systems floating around running operating systems that were EOL'd years ago because it is too much hassle to deal with.
Not giving us an upgrade path is a strong incentive to strip Plesk out of the system and replace it with something less intrusive (and free), like webmin.

Upgrade from Debian9 to Debian10 is very welcome! EOL for Debian 9 was 2020-07-06. This is important for nearly 250 servers with Plesk 18 we have. A migration is no real solution. TY!

I need to upgrade to 20.04 or at least 18.04 ASAP!

Of course. I think this needs to be done early rather than waiting for the old operating system to near the end of life. Delaying to EOL will leave SysAdmin with less options and less time.

PutinLuver130 get them boi, get the corrupt ones and hold them accountable, Plesk is clearly scamming his customers withholding long time features

Tried to update my system yesterday only to find out that it is not possible at all. Very disappointing. please give us an ETA as soon as possible.

I concur that it feels that you failed to see the importance of that functionality. I would encourage you to start working on an upgrade to 20 as soon as the process to 18 is functioning.
If you could deliver an upgrade path to 20 within a year, maybe you could restore some lost confidence, but you gave us the feeling of being trapped on an OS, you guys should be careful not to do that again. -

I need to upgrade to 20.04 or at least 18.04 ASAP! This is getting me into deep trouble. I can't believe, that this is not implemented from the start... very disappointing. Otherwise I am really glad with Plesk - but this is a dealbreaker...

@anonym
If dist-upgrade is not there by the end of 2020, I will switch to cpanel. They say, it's as good or even better than plesk.
With me, other clients of me will switch, too -

It is obvious, that many of us plesk customers are very disappointed and a missing upgrade path has a big negative impact on our business. It is ok to be frustrated about it and communicate it here, BUT this is a professional relationship between a company and its customers and those insults are NOT helping anyone.
